I mean it actually used to be the Secretary of War. The United States only started calling it the Secretary of “Defense” in the post-war shakeup. It’s a Cold War artifact.

The secretary of defense used to be called the secretary of war, they changed it for PR reasons right around the same time we changed the term propaganda to PR. I appreciate the honesty.
The term “politically correct” was born out of this. It describes the process in which bad things are made more palatable through renaming. Other examples include:
- war profiteering -> military industrial complex
- imperialism -> spreading democracy
- person killed by police -> officer-involved shooting
- schools experiencing de facto segregation -> inner-city schools
- white neighborhoods -> affluent neighborhoods
