This generally lines up with capitalist profit-seeking making everything worse, more vapid and bland. I agree with him largely. Mainstream shit is dumber and dumber. Doesn’t mean great stuff stops getting made, it’s just not part of the equation in these hollywood juggernaut board meetings.

Anecdotally I’ve had young adults burnt out by work and stress explicitly state they want easy brain dead shit to consume. Hard to argue with that honest perspective.

Agreed. It’s really a bummer that “The Arts” (movies specifically) are so totally captured by MEGACORPS and Capital Vampires. I love supporting independent arts (again specifically movies), but it’s an ceaseless uphill battle for anyone those people to make it and even harder to get in front of people. Even if the people would like it, it’s just so damn difficult to get your art in front of people if you’re operating outside of the ever encroach domain of the modern Robber Barons.

The whole game is fucked up, and it’s fucked up because Hollywood (and of course Capitalism at large) made it that way. Art under capital sucks so much.

I think it’s hard to want to watch something really emotionally intense when real life already is really emotionally intense.

I mean it’s true. A lot of adults, from everyday people to some of the most famous people on earth are still mentally stuck in high school. And it shows in the art that is currently popular, in terms of both music and films. It’s also getting harder and harder to make art for adults, with attention spans being so terrible that anything that has decent pacing is now considered a “slow burn”, and people having less life experience when compared to their parents or grandparents at a similar age.

I watched Oppenheimer recently on a plane and was astonished that the whole movie basically just felt like a montage, jumping around every 3 seconds. Admittedly I didn’t quite finish the movie so maybe it gets better at the end. And I’m sure this was an intentional choice, but I didn’t really like it if it was.

I just looked it up, apparently the average shot length was 3.2 seconds.
