Thumbnail is clickbait in the sense that the video does not address specific instances by specific creators, but is more of a call on everyone to reflect on certain behaviors we might/might not engage with. Just watch the first two minutes if that’s all the time you have right now, but do that much at least.

Edit: Some people are taking quotes that the AI has written in a comment and acting as if that’s what’s actually in the video. It’s not. I thought it should be obvious that if you want to critique the video, you have to watch it rather than depend on an AI to to provide a a summary.

This. the ironic misogyny and vibes you get from these places is grating if your not a cis male. and as much as I liked true anon brace’s ironic misogyny put me off so much I stopped watching for a while. Like duh women don’t wanna listen to that shit! it got old when right-wingers and centrists do it, it literally just puts off potential leftists with the way some figures on the left operate. funny-clown-hammer is an egregious example of this as always.

What I’m saying that leftist men need to read feminist theory and do some unpacking about trans/cis women. It’s the bare minimum in 2023

churches are better at incorporating women then the left is at this moment in time.

Church organizations tend to have more funding and larger congregations, they tend to have more veteran organizers and larger pools of people to draw on, and they tend to leverage a moral imperative that’s been baked into the congregation’s social life since birth rather than formulating a rallying cry lots of westerners haven’t heard in decades.

I noticed this in a local dsa chapter where they had to meet a quota of 50 % women in org in positions of leadership, but they would quickly promote people who weren’t ready for leadership as they had not enough experience

Young organizations are going to struggle with finding and promoting leaders. Lots of this is going to be trial-and-error. The fact that DSA leadership is making a good-faith effort to equitably include people is good. However, simply establishing arbitrary quotas doesn’t work, because the people you’re appointing as “leaders” don’t have a following.

This isn’t even strictly an experience problem. Large organizations are often amalgamations of smaller cliches and social groups. Extended families, religiously inclined business owners, and neighborhood/school groups will make up pockets of support in the church that the folks at the top of the hierarchy have to court in order to get anything done.

So perhaps the problem isn’t that the DSA needs more women leaders (or… more non-binary males? Woof) but more outreach to women’s groups that already exist in the area.

Are there local junior leagues, nurses unions, PTAs, or… idk… church groups, that DSA members could collaborate with? Rather than looking for women to be leaders, perhaps you can look for existing leaders in the community who are also women?

Wow it’s almost like strict demographic quotas and tokenism do not lead to societal advancement and instead have people being weird about it! It’s the mentality of girlboss feminism that says that progress is when people who are oppressed in one way get to be the oppressors in a different way.

and now they where asking male members to identify as non binary because they burned all the local cadres out. Just to fill the quota. I guess I feel pessimistic at this moment.

Isn’t this a C. Derick Varn anecdote or were you also at a DSA meeting when this happen? If so I’ll just had a correction that in Varn’s anecdote DSA wasn’t asking male members to identify as non binary, but 2 male members were talking to each other and one of them proposed doing that to fill the quota.

I think the point of the story is less “left bad at women” and more…don’t put these quotas in place if they’re not adequate

I wonder which female creators she’s referring to when she says they’re not taken seriously because they’re denounced as too liberal or bougie. Personally I don’t take any of breadtube seriously, but the algorithm has only ever pushed Contra, PT, and…. That’s it as far as I can tell.

And Contra is 1000% a bougie liberal. PT only like, uh, 98%. But if V**sh counts (and OOP counts him), then it’s not like the men aren’t reactionary slop-gourmands, with the better among them* just limiting what they say to the more pure expressions of that in media criticism rather than pretending to really do politics.

Turns out liberalism is a fucking problem that needs to be combated!

I think it’s more of a YouTube problem than a left-media problem, or at least way more pronounced on YT, because I can think of so many woman MLs on podcasts but YT is like, IDK, 2-3, especially big name ones? Anything with a visual component is going to be harder on women than men most likely and YT is filled with the worst men imaginable watching things.

This, 100%. It’s not about breadtube, but about patriarchy in leftist/activist communities. The “breadtube” part is miniscule. I’ll say this again - if you’re a leftist man, this is a must watch to help you kill the “patriarch within” even if you just watch the first 2-5 mins right now.

You’ll never make it as a content creator with a handful of concise paragraphs, you need to deep dive with a 40 minute video

That said from what I’ve briefly engaged with, I have no doubt breadtube is toxic to women

Someone posted an AI summary earlier that got the structure of the essay correct, even if it made the content seem more superficial than it was. You can probably find it in the mod log if you want. I’d still recommended you watch just the first five minutes if you can, though.

Edit: Some people are taking quotes that the AI has written and acting as if that’s what’s actually in the video. It’s not. I thought it should be obvious that if you want to critique the video, you have to watch it rather than depend on an AI to to provide a a summary.

It’s a good summary. Misses some of the nuances, obviously, and makes it seem more basic/superficial than it is, but as far as the structure goes, I think it is good.

But one of the core parts of this video that really resonated with me, and which this summary missed entirely, was that at the end of every section, there were questions that the OP posed to us, the audience, to reflect/think on, based on that section. I think that’s extremely important, because, if you are willing to be challenged, then the video can do that. It’s not just “patriarchy bad”.

I appreciate the AI summary being removed because of the way some people were taking it, but you might have been a bit too hostile. They’d edited the comment when they saw others take AI arguments seriously and as a substitute for the video, and at the bottom they’d mentioned a Men’s Lib group (the good kind) that talked about similar issues. So, I don’t think they were engaging in bad faith, just unfamiliar with how AI is perceived here.

Sorry if that was a bit aggressive, it does seem that you were trying to engage in good faith, I’m just not a fan of summarizing with LLMs unless it’s for a bit. They’ll never be able to actually parse the information in a video or book right and will just give you something that looks correct, but can misrepresent major parts of an argument or story.

How do you imagine that some LLM that doesn’t even have access to the video would be able to summarize it? I’d give it less than a 50% chance of giving a decent summary of most novels or short stories unless you paste the whole text into the prompt. What the hell is it supposed to do about a video?

That’s interesting. Doesn’t it have weird line breaks, or did you go through and fix those instead of just writing a summary yourself? At least from what I remember of retrieving a transcripts on YT recently, that’s how it goes.

Then again, we’re again talking about a LLM, so even if we imagine that it parses that okay for what it is, it’s still just using spitballing based on aggregated data to write what it thinks is plausible-sounding on a basis of syntax, vocabulary, and formatting rather than something like concepts. It’s much more the superficial level of communication than people tend to believe.

i’m sure it’s just clickbait, and like all of these “breadtube has a problem” videos it makes some serious but ultimately uncontroversial criticisms of the milieu, but like, come on

e: nvm, no investigation, no right to criticize, i’ll watch the video first
