Consider that this is not why their tune changed. The mass starvation is not what the media and NGOs care about to the exclusion of bombings, but it is the prelude to a very sudden increase in deaths, an unignorable number, and they want to get ahead of this and begin hand-wringing so they can pretend to have always been against this despite actually supporting it for 2 years. It is a successor to “we are working hard on a ceasefire” and “look we are providing air dropped aid”, i.e. cynical PR.

they are also doing a big push right now to set up a Palestinian “state” with no sovereignty run by Palestinian Authority (who everyone in Palestine hates). That’s why France, Canada, England, etc. all are suddenly talking about recognizing Palestine “with conditions” (no Hamas, surrender all arms).

This is part of a last ditch effort by the west to settle this colonizing “peacefully” in a political/diplomatic way before Israel finishes the extermination by force. It’s the “good cop” option.

Because you can get away with “but KHamas was in there!” when you bomb civilians. It’s a lot harder to come up with a plausible excuse when you starve them. They’ve tried “but KHamas is eating all the food with a comically large spoon!” but it’s a much tougher sell.

Personally I’m wondering if it’s literally as simple as “you can show emaciated kids on tv but you have to blur out exploded/burned bodies”. This is horrifying and more visible.

They had no problem with bombing hospitals, children with headshots, young males purposely shot in the genitals, or using Caterpillar bulldozers to bury people alive, but starvation is their redline? Even then, the NYTimes apologized because the photo of the child they showed starving to death had a pre-existing condition, as if that somehow makes it OK.

Because it’s harder to believe some skeleton-in-clothes is a viable combatant, doubly so for children. Like a rifle weighs as much as them. They just look like victims.
