Snip:

The pre-print of a new study led by Prof. Michael Spagat of Royal Holloway, University of London, and Palestinian political scientist Dr. Khalil Shikaki has revealed that Gaza’s death toll from the ongoing conflict could be nearly 100,000, a figure significantly higher than official reports, Haaretz reported on 26 June.

The Gaza Mortality Survey (GMS), the most comprehensive to date, estimates around 75,200 violent deaths between October 2023 and January 2025—nearly 40 percent higher than the Gaza Health Ministry’s reported death toll of 45,660 at the time.

Researchers carried out a detailed household survey, interviewing 2,000 families—around 9,700 individuals—to independently evaluate fatalities.

The study estimated 8,540 additional non-violent deaths through January, bringing the combined fatality count for that period to 83,740. Gaza’s Health Ministry has recorded over 10,000 more deaths since then, raising the current total to nearly 100,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.

Don’t want to minimize the genocide one bit, since it’s truly horrific, but the bloodiest 21st century war is the Second Congo War which had around four million deaths. Besides, the genocide in Gaza can hardly be called a “war” at all.

      Second Congo War

We really don’t get enough information on this one in the English-speaking world. One of the largest (or just the largest?) conflicts since WW2 and it was a conventional war (as opposed to an imperialist nation vs. an insurgency). Some wild shit happened in the Second Congo War and we never hear about it.

To be fair, you cant fully divorce it from imperialism. It was an ex Marxist and ex follower of Lumumba, vs Mobutu, a CIA installed leader who started out as a comprador but eventually became a nuisance for them.

Oh yah for sure. I just meant it wasn’t like the US in Afghanistan where we had tanks, planes, and a navy against their bolt action rifles and IEDs. The Second Congo War had professional armies fighting other professional armies. I think it was also the war where one side parachuted a bunch of pilots into an airforce base and stole all the other side’s planes?

Yeah it’s better framed as an African world war, since there were a dozen nations involved in different fronts, with various different sides, insurgency groups, states with air forces, different phases, etc. It was a total shit show. I’m glad the third one didn’t spiral out of control. The mineral deal the DRC signed with Trump is pretty awful but not nearly as awful as a full blown third Congo War at the scale of the second.

Would you be so kind as to provide some links for the comrades that want to educate ourselves about this war?
