I watch a lot of the Hasan Abi industrial complex to keep up on the news. There’s more and more of these channels skip clipping over words like “killed”, “bomb”, “war”, and even “gun”. One of the clips I saw earlier kept the word “missile” too… That’s just a bomb with propellant!! I don’t get why they keep doing this, it’s really annoying. It just feels like yuppy bullshit, I have yet to encounter someone who gets triggered by these words, online or irl.

Thanks for reading my rant, goodnight.

Possibly, since it’s literally algorithms that catch things and demonetize videos for them. Or they’re just copying the smaller channels for whom it is a legitimate concern to seem more authentic.

ABC, etc. mainstream news don’t rely on YouTube revenue. So even if Google is demonetizing them (seems doubtful. It’s literally on primetime OTA and cable channels regulated by the FCC. No way advertisers find much to whine about there) it doesn’t really matter to them as much as, say, if you, I assume a regular person, made a living editing clips and posting them for the ad revenue.

    • Yeah and the real answer to this is to ban or severely limit automated ad targeting

Ban companies from using automated language detection to determine advertising.

Honestly I’d argue for “Ban any sort of automated ad targeting full stop,” the options are a human looks at a video and assigns a specific ad to play for that video, or the whole website gets a selection of ads that are assigned randomly.

I was carrying my lead projector when I was suddenly un-alived by a rapid-exothermic-chemical-reaction device, in the final days of the state kerfuffle.

They do it to avoid being censored aka the channel doesn’t get money for ads.

However, people absolutely go overboard with it. You can say missile. You can say died. That isn’t about getting demonetized, that is about playing the “algo game” or whatever and trying to sneak past it to get more views to get more ad revenue. It comes at the expense (high, imo) of making a nearly unwatchable mess of “Are you [silent] serious chatter? Did your [silent] mom [silent] you on your [silent] [silent]?! Shut the [silent] up! Of course [silent] [silent] him! We know they used the [silent] to [silent] him! [silent]ing idiot! [huge silence]”

It’s too fucking much self censorship. I don’t know what the solution is either because everyone who posts content has decided it’s just ok to upload the censored slop and, to my knowledge, not much proof exists for what words (beyond the obvious) or topics even cause demonetization and especially lack of evidence for what causes “shadow banning” aka YouTube not showing the channel to many fresh eyes.

I have no idea why he’s still doing segues live. He claims to have live-polled the question (which I call bullshit on. I’ve never seen proof he ever asked chat if they wanted to keep the segues or not), but even if he did, that was multiple years ago, and chat is basically collectively less intelligent than your average rock. Stop doing them for the holy love of anything you value! Just silently run the ads as part of the evil Bezos contract. The joke was never that funny and totally lost steam years ago.

I had to stop watching those channels, they go way overboard with it. They also do a terrible job of censoring the words in a way that still makes it understandable. They only need to mute the audio for a tiny part of the words to make it past the demonetization filter, but those channels cut the entire word with the video. It’s makes it incomprehensible.

It only matters for the first couple of minutes. If you watch a video all the way through they’ll leave the swearing in at the end because the monetisation check is only for the start
