Prominent Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and five others were assassinated in an Israeli airstrike on a media tent at Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital late on 10 August.
Journalists Mohammad al-Khalidi, Mohammad Qureiqaa, Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Alaywa, and Mohammad Nofal were killed alongside him.
“The number of martyred journalists [since the start of the war] rises to 238 after the announcement of the martyrdom of journalist Mohammad al-Khalidi, joining his five colleagues killed in yesterday’s massacre,” Gaza’s Government Media Office said in a statement on 11 August.
“We hold the Israeli occupation, the US administration, and the countries complicit in the genocide – such as the UK, Germany, and France – fully responsible for committing these heinous, brutal crimes. We call on the international community, international organizations, and all bodies concerned with journalism and media around the world to condemn the occupation’s crimes, work to deter it, prosecute it in international courts for its ongoing crimes, and bring its criminals to justice,” it added.
Here in the UK this is being reported very aggressively. Al Jazeera has a number of former bbc workers and I’m quite sure they’re still well connected with colleagues and well respected among journalists here. Killing Al Jazeera journalists is not going to be viewed or reported as any different than killing any other journalist.
