God, this is probably the worst thing about this country for me on a daily basis.

completely. cities closing at dusk is entirely Anglo law and order brain shit because uhhh people do crimes at night. it makes cities safer to promote a healthy and busy nightlife. having to go back to your shitty rental apt at 8pm to t-pose until the morning is fucking depressing actually. in my city the only thing you can do after that time is get drunk and it sucks.

This started happening before COVID at least in my city. I think it became sort of a worker safety issue.
yeah i think it’s a huge factor, every business moved towards skeleton crew since covid and night shift workers generally get paid more so they were the first to go
I’m hoping eventually this extends back to stuff like TV stations signing off and the end of the 24/7 news cycle. Won’t put the cat back in the bag on the latter, but this whole “No brakes, society has to keep moving all the time and constantly get faster at it” mindset is unsustainable for a whole host of reasons.
I think the biggest issue with this trend is how it affects night-shift workers. Small towns are already constrictive food deserts, if you work nights it’s completely isolating.
Obviously not everything needs to be open 24/7, but there are a few things that should, like fucking Walmart. All of my local Walmarts started closing at 10 or 11 when Covid hit and it was a pain in the ass.
I had classes in the day and worked evenings, I usually didn’t get off until like midnight. Often the only time my partner and I were both free to go grocery shopping was late at night.
Also sometimes small emergencies happen and you need a thing to fix it. It’s such a big quality of life improvement to me to have a store that has a wide variety of things open 24/7.

It costs actual money to be open. Lot of places require extended hours permits to stay open past 11pm-midnite. The returns on staying open 24/7 May not justify staying open all nite. Also, I like to sleep.
I understand there are third shifters , I get that folks have insomnia. But the examples used haven’t really changed. Wendy’s is still ‘open late’. Open late doesn’t mean 24/7. Whataburger are still 24/7. Taco Bell’s are mostly independently owned and have always set their own hours, more or less. The mom n pop gas stations have always closed around around 11,12. The big ones are still open 24/7. She uses Irving Pizza as an example, then complains that the place that took the space when Irving Pizza closes doesn’t have the same business hours ?

In many countries close to the equator where it is hot and humid all year round (e.g. Southeast Asian countries), it is unpleasant to hang out in the sun during the day. Most people spend their time indoor in air conditioned buildings during the day. Nightlife is important for people living in those places. Also, people hang out late to watch European soccer, which is part of the social life there.
Similarly, there are many cities in China along Changjiang/Yangtze River like Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing etc. that are just way too fucking hot and humid during the summer. Except for Hangzhou where people go to bed at 9pm (lol), in many cities people prefer to hang out at night due to the unbearable heat during the day.
When I lived in Brasil for a bit with my girlfriend at the time I always found it funny how people would just hang out in front of gas stations at night drinking and socializing. Every station had plastic chairs and benches outside so you know oh this is the designated hang out spot. Something people absolutely do not do around my neck of the woods since I live near a highway and things close by 9-10 pm.

People there just don’t like fun I guess lol. To be clear, there are night clubs and stuff but the streets are already quiet around 9-10pm. Nightlife is just not their vibe.
In places like Wuhan, you can easily hang out at hotpot shops that open until 7am lol.

You’re painting with a real broad brush there. It isn’t just anglos who own businesses that aren’t open 24/7. This isn’t sundown town shit.
This is why I would love to live in a walkable 15 min city (outside of it’s satanic) the access to 24/7 stuff and ofc being able to just walk there. I’d be okay even if the places close overnight like it 12-1-2 am so you could just plan ahead even.
