Just recently, the more lib-oriented content creators were hyping up how the Ukrainian armed forces had “invented” a war crime drones dropping thermite onto enemy positions. My first thought was “Why are they using drones to dump thermite on a target instead of using artillery or missiles or a drone bomb? Are they really scraping the bottom of the barrel and going for improvised weapons?”

And it sounds as though they might just be. It’s fascinating to see how divergent their perspective is compared to mine.

Thermite is very stable and it’s basically impossible to put out once it’s going. Hard to ignite though, but that’s equal parts feature and bug; some things burn hot enough for it, you just have to use your iMgination. A reasonable quantity will melt metal, so it’s good for dealing with vehicles if you get it in the right place. I appreciate the Cody’s Lab approach using aluminium foil because it provides versatility. My guess is that the Ukrainian armed forces are using something like a paint can and steel wire to contain the thermite while suspending it below the drone.
