I have seen so, so many people with otherwise decent politics support NATO or make Xi Winnie the Pooh jokes or whatever. They can understand all about how the ruling class is fucking them over and capitalism is unsustainable, but they will cling to their notion that the West is superior and should rule the world like it’s a life preserver in a stormy sea.

I think for people who’ve otherwise embraced left politics, it’s a belief that the long-dead glory years can be brought back if the conditions are juuuuust right. There’s so much mythology built around the idea of the West vanquishing fascism in WWII, so they think that potential of righteous liberation is still buried in there somewhere. So no matter how many times since then it’s shit the bed or used for outright evil since then, they can’t give up the dream of what the Western military machine could do.
