I recently passed my driving test and I need a music app that plays local files and can be controlled by google assistant for handsfree. I’ve been using AIMP for ages and its worked great but I can’t specify any songs or playlists via the assistant, I can only tell it to “play music on AIMP” and it plays whatever I was playing before. I would much prefer a FOSS app to do this but if there isnt one available that works with the assistant then it doesent have to be FOSS. If I can’t find an app that suits my needs spotify would probably be my only option but I’ve got a large library of music already downloaded and i’d much rather not pay for premium just for the ability to play my local files lol.
I think GA support + FOSS will be hard to find. That’s often a feature for paid apps, but too niche for foss
One option might be to use Mycroft, the FOSS speech assistant. If I understand correctly you’d have to install support for playing local music - I found one such plugin, but it hasn’t been updated in a few years so who knows if it’ll work.
Once I rented a car with voice commands (not android, and Bluetooth. It was able to reproduce my music from my phone (using Vinyl from F-droid). I think it connects directly to some sort of API on the phone once it’s paired, so the music playback is controllable… YMMV.
It’s not FOSS, but Symfonium should be able to do that.
