They basically yell this as the theme in your face during the crossover episode with lower decks.
I think it works fantastically as what we wish the world was like. And that’s what Star Trek needs to be. It’s hopeful. I was fucking sobbing on episode 2. Not because of beautiful writing or whatever, though it is VERY GOOD, just that someone addressing the fucking issues in a way that maybe there’s some hope to it.
The writers of this one really are trying to be hopeful during a really fucking terrible time and I think that is awesome.
I keep using the word “hope”. That’s the only one for it. It’s not positive. It’s not even optimistic. It’s hopeful. And that is enough to make me cry.
Edit: m’benga killed a fucking war criminal, in damn close to cold blood (a circumstance m’benga coerced in fact), and it was was played as good. It’s good fucking TV
imagine if they had done this one first instead of the other shows
I haven’t wanted to sit and dissect episode after episode like this since season 3 onwards of ds9. Going back to the basics, TOS era, was a solid move. Really “hope” this trend continues because wow.
Also suddenly they’re doing Klingons right again
Going forwards and turning the federation dystopic, ala Picard, is bullshit because it’s the same bullshit we deal with in real life. Thats so far from the point of trek it’s nearly sacrilege.
Disco, should’ve, and has now become basically, a different timeline. It’s just movie stuff and does not focus on philosophical and ideological issues enough, it’s schloppy sci-fi.
Strange New Worlds hit the philosophical basics in season 1, but season 2 is now working effectively as a mirror to our current real world situation and the crossroads we are at. I am absolutely astounded at that fwiw, did not expect it to occur again in a trek
Also it’s sexy, but not in the enterprise way, in the star trek way
It’s particularly frustrating because the critical examination of the Federation as utopia idea has already been done well. DS9 managed to wrangle with the material and political underpinnings of that (and from a lot of different angles) in a way that not only doesn’t abandon optimism and aspiration, it makes them more tangible.
Even this fucking musical episode is hitting on real shit. What the hell?
Ok I’m finding the truth of trek here. It has to be a satire, but one presented without a hint of irony and entirely sentiment.
It’s a sappy satire. Oh also sexy (tension-wise). Without that, vibes are off.
Good luck recreating it. They somehow did it here.

Truly great sci-fi is usually social commentary on the real world. And often low-key satirical on the more ridiculous aspects of the real world.

for sure

yeah disco shouldn’t have been called trek. IP law is a fuck
if SNW finds its feet and stays good for a couple seasons i’ll watch it but i’ve been burned before and alex kurtzman isn’t blacklisted so it’s too soon for me to fully trust.
I feel you. I am “hoping” kurtzmans just a name so studios are comfortable funding ala berman because this has been so far removed from anything he’s involved in so far
It’s the hope.
Star Trek SNW is a world where things are getting better.
Also the thing that finally clicked from this and Lower Decks… everyone WANTS to be working on the ships.
Starfleet is not primarily a military organization, it’s an experience thing, as it’s not really about mapping space or doing SCIENCS or diplomacy, it’s all of it, a little bubble of people floating in space looking for interesting things and interacting.
Got co-linw cook intonthe show who was a geologist and is still academically but not by trade and he was like ‘this shit RULES! I could just go look at rocks cause rocks are cool! Not cause someone wants to find oil!’
Just that idea is enough to make me burst into tears lmao
