I hate everything being an advert. The city skyline? Signs. Entertainment on phone? Ads. TV entertainment? Commercials. Movie theater? Previews. The movie itself? Product placement. Websites? Ludicrous ads. I wish I could enjoy something without partaking in marketing. One of the reasons I use Linux so devoutly. They’re not selling me anything. But if I harp too much on that, suddenly I become an ad for Linux!
I have a family member who quotes “Little Boxes” thinking it’s talking about socialism
I seriously hate that argument. There’s like a couple bridges in all of Alberta that look cool and the rest just looks like boring ass utilitarian skyscrapers, cookie cutter ass neighborhoods, and parking lots.
Also, having lived in both Soviet style microdistricts and American style city planning, it’s obvious to me that the latter is far less convenient for day to day life. You typically won’t have all the daily necessities within walking distance, and public transit tends to be thread bare. This means your best option is to drive everywhere. Most people end up spending multiple hours every day sitting in their cars to go to work, get groceries, and so on.
Yes. I live in Alberta, and when I lived in the big cities I absolutely hated how if you need anything at all it’s at least a half an hour commute.
It’s an absolutely insane way to design cities in my opinion.
I’ve noticed recently that a lot of people I’ve spoken too have been far more pro “commieblock” than people were in the past, I think people are getting sick of how expensive and inconvenient car-centric cities are(and how expensive rent is), to the point they’ll even be pro-soviet union, at least in some respects, it does feel like people are actively questioning why things are the way they are now and asking why they aren’t better.
Yeah, now that it’s becoming obvious that housing is completely unaffordable for majority of people, the idea living in a condo doesn’t seem so bad all of a sudden.
And meanwhile in Finland the Soviet blocks look like this as they are maintained relatively well:
You can’t see the problem? It’s all grey and colorless! Towns should be painted red, yellow, and sometimes blue or whatever the marketing research says will sell more burgers. duh
