Pure ego fueled by capitalist dogma and contrarianism. Capitalists view people’s worth according to how much money they have instead of viewing human beings as inherently valuable. They eventually have more money than doctors, who they start to look down on the same way petite bourgeois and chuds look down on cashiers, janitors, mechanics, and so on.
When doctors don’t give them answers they want to hear, the wealthy start thinking doctors are wrong and they can figure things out on their own. After all, “If a doctor was smart, wouldn’t they be rich like me? They aren’t so therefore they’re no different than unskilled labor!”
And because they have to do the opposite of what the doctor tells them, they get into conspiracy woo-woo fuckery. Couple this with being surrounded by people whose jobs depend on being liked, these capitalists get nothing but praise and ass kissing, reinforcing their illusions of being geniuses.
