For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, I was asked for more horror, despite the passing of Halloween. November 6 is close enough, isn’t it? We’ll start with X (2022), a slasher about a group of 1970s youths who go to the middle of nowhere in Texas to make a porno. Unfortunately for them, the old people hosting them discover what they are doing, and suddenly, the crew starts being brutally murdered, one by one. Will anyone be spared? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Ti West, who also did the film’s prequel, Pearl (2022), which was released a few months afterward. I guess we’ll have to watch that one, too.

After that is The Adventures of Chatran (1986), the Japanese tale of a kitten and a dog who make their way through the wilderness together, and then are separated, and then risk everything to find each other again. It contains no dialogue except for some voiceover narration. It looks adorable. In 1989, it was cut down, rescored, and given a new, snarkier dub under the title The Adventures of Milo and Otis. We are watching the original, unabridged Japanese version, featuring its original score by the renowned Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is the most notable work of director Masanori Hata, who also worked on Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989).

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

CWs for The Adventures of Chatran:

  • The film is subject to a long-standing rumor that a whole bunch of cats died during production. This claim is probably bullshit, as no investigations have turned up any evidence, and both American and Japanese animal-rights groups signed off on it. Nevertheless, some of the stunts in the film probably scared the animals.
