Yeah that’s a good point. We make some pretty gourmet meatloaf at my house so I might quibble with you on that one. But I am sure there’s some awful meatloaf out there too. Manwch is just… I can’t even. Isn’t it basically dog food you put on bread and call it a sandwich?

I am so gratified to learn that others use this term, too. Ain’t nothing wrong with some hamburger meat in a large tortilla chip with cheddar cheese, but it is most definitely not the same food item as you get from a taco joint. This is one of those home cooking exclusives.

Fresh kill is a far cry from raw meat days after butchering which is only deemed safe on the condition that it gets cooked.

I liked its portrayal of “how would I outsmart myself, an identical me that’s also trying to outsmart me back?”

Watching 7 people all try to do that together makes for a lot of interesting drama, and shakes out much that they’d hoped to hide about themselves. In fact that’s exactly how some of the characters try to outsmart themselves: by going for that jugular vein of deep dark secrets no one knows. Fucking brutal.

And all that would be impossible to portray without sci-fi. This movie’s vehicle for the sci-fi elements is dumb as rocks: a comet passes overhead and fractures quantum spacetime. Wut? It’s not an important point but damn, at least make it sound like you tried.

I enjoyed Big Hero 6 but one of the top defining “hard” sci fi movies of all time, in the same list as Metropolis?? All because of its supposed sophistication in portraying AI? “AI is good for once!” Uhhh it’s totally a case of green light means good robot and red light means evil robot. Cute movie but this list is hot garbage.

What would you say the show is about? And not just the starting premise. Having seen the whole thing, what’s at the center?

I read the books and ultimately didn’t like them very much. I recognize their value but they just weren’t for me. I don’t remember a lot about them, enough, say, to get upset about how they changed this or that character.

And I found that show to be an utter mess. Just a mess. It’s a mess absolutely chock full of stuff. It’s a very beautiful mess. It’s a mess with amazing production values. But it’s still a hot mess. Forget adapting the books… what in the world is it about at all?? Ultimately it seemed to just get stuck on its emperor character and invented various struggles to take him down. Totally empty in the end.

There’s a tried and true solution: more kittens!

I’m glad to know it’s a humane trap because this is not a video of a woman “helping” a wild cat like OP said. It’s a video of a woman mitigating a mistaken impact her traps made on an unintended species. She’s got special equipment for this so clearly expects it. But if she’s dealing with bad coyote problems, and it’s not harmful to the cat, then okay I guess.

It’s very weird to me that they wrote him out of the show, filmed an end to that character, and then fired him. Often when an actor abruptly exits a show they just vanish and you find out how they died offstage somehow. This guy had to participate in his own ejection from the show. His character kind of dies a hero, too, which makes it even weirder. I guess they were trying to jettison the actor without harming the character.

We use Weruva because they have multiple flavors with no fish content. One of our cats is allergic to fish protein. It’s also very high quality. Many options that aren’t a stomach-turning pate.

Yeah maybe not horror, but it has some pretty grody moments, like eating the live worm and the birth scene zomg the birth scene…

Also chilling: he doesn’t die.

It reminds me a little of the Reavers in Firefly. We have this notion that when we are far removed from our familiar surroundings and isolated in bleak emptiness, that we will somehow stare into the void and lose our minds, turning savage and cruel as we go insane.

But if it’s any consolidation, outer space is far too dangerous for it to ever get to that point. Even highly qualified professionals who are trying their best can find it difficult to survive in space. There’s no way a violently insane person would last 30 seconds there.

It’s a story that would totally work even without any sci fi elements, which I think means it is good. You could ask whether it’s good sci fi without such core speculative elements. But it consistently stretches into strange territory (hermaphroditism, meteor weather, edible footballs) in a convincing way that you’d have a hell of a time saying it’s anything but sci fi.
