Primarily I use Arch on my desktop (and by proxy, my Steam Deck which runs SteamOS), which is what I’ve landed on after a ton of distro hopping. The idea of Atomic distros catches my eyes, but for me in its present state there are too many steps needed in order to make deeper changes (for example, installing a kernel module) - but I quite like SteamOS on my Deck since I know it will always be in a “consistent” state, for example.

On servers I run a mix of Rocky Linux and Debian.

That’s quite unfortunate to hear. I use Bitwarden along with Gboard and very rarely run into issues - I believe most password managers have a quick settings toggle that you can add into your notification drawer to maybe get around this? From what I know though, these generally use the Accessibility framework to function, and thus will heavily depend on your password manager - it also gives a lot more access to those apps than the built in autofill framework.

Conversely I remember Bitwarden’s autofill support on iOS being quirky when I last used it (which to be fair, has been a while - I’m sure its improved since then). IIRC it pretty much always worked in Safari (and Safari Web Views within apps), but the actual applications themselves wouldn’t always give me the autofill prompt.

For me though, regardless of the platform it still is far more worth using a password manager and unique passwords per-site than to use a single password (or even a handful) across sites. I hope autofill support improves for those that it doesn’t work well with.

Then recently I’ve been streaming Helldivers 2 from my PC to my Deck while it’s connected to the living room TV, which has been fun.

Try resetting your Firefox profile. Sometimes a weird setting can break browsers in spectacular ways.

This was a big one for me, for the longest time I could not figure out why I couldn’t get YouTube to play videos over 1080p for me in Firefox on my PC, it ended up being some weird setting that I changed in about:config (I sadly cannot recall which one) a long time ago - but I’d always copied my Firefox profile with me so that bad setting stuck around.

Just in case you (or anyone else) weren’t aware, Rocket League can still be played perfectly on Linux via Steam by just force enabling Proton - however nonetheless I 100% agree.

IIRC they also just recently launched a new setting that allows you to permanently set the target resolution for all games (this might still only be in the beta branch though).

Previously you had to go into each game’s settings from Steam, and change the resolution there (which might be how you missed it).

This is what I’ve been playing too, and I’m having an absolute blast with it!

I’d recommend using ROCM through a Distrobox container, personally I use this Distrobox container file and it has suited all of my needs with Stable Diffusion so far.

That is, if you’re still interested in it - I could totally understand writing it off after what happened 😅

I usually just get by with Alacritty and Zellij, pairs pretty well together.

IIRC this was in regards to Microsoft wanting to close access to the kernel, while also still wanting to use kernel-level APIs for their security suite - which does come down to anticompetitive practices.

However, if Microsoft were not to offer separate products that used kernel-level APIs then in theory it would not have this same issue, which I assume is how Apple gets away with it. But, I am not a lawyer so its just speculation on my part.

In 8 years I could probably get get a double masters in programming and game development and make a better game myself.

If they’re using Fedora, then it is highly likely that they are using GRUB as you have to very much go out of your way to utilize systemd-boot on Fedora the last time I checked.

Well, my father’s funeral service was today. I lost him at the beginning of the month.

It’s been rough. There were a lot of issues between him and I during my childhood which caused me to quickly cut off contact with him after I moved out. But I’d always hoped that eventually there would be a way to fix things, and now that will never happen.

So there’s a lot of guilt. I do not think it was wrong to remove him from my life, but it was never intended to be a permanent thing - it’s forever written in stone as it is now though.

I need to get into some grief counseling, but starting that process has been difficult for me. It doesn’t help that I already have a lot of other medical issues constantly ongoing, and now this is just another thing to add to the list.

Listen, I’m not going to lie and say that Linux is all sunshine and rainbows, because it isn’t - but neither is Windows. But I can play this game too!

• Minecraft runs faster for me on Linux than it does on Windows, I get frequent stutters in Windows especially when trying to use mods (the same exact profile has zero issues on Linux).

  • In fact, some shitty software that I used to have to install for work would constantly cause Minecraft to randomly die in the middle of the game’s initialization.
  • Oh, and I had a friend who couldn’t get the Minecraft Launcher to even prompt the Microsoft account sign in screen, we eventually tracked it down to the fact that he had uninstalled Edge (through the control panel - not with some hacky script or whatever), which apparently breaks the ability for the game to display the OAuth authorization screen. Did it ever tell us that this was the issue? No, we had to spend time tracking it down.

• Razer’s software was so horrible in Windows that it would quite literally cause Windows Explorer to not startup properly unless I didn’t have the hardware connected when I logged in. Otherwise it was a roll of the dice whether Explorer and the rest of the desktop shell would start. There is zero reason that having a peripheral plugged in should cause Windows’ services to not start properly. OpenRazer on Linux has never caused anything like this, and works flawlessly. Nope, don’t blame it on Razer. As an end-user, I don’t care about that.

Even tracking the problem down to it being due to Razer was a major pain.

Windows has all sorts of issues constantly, however according to the Microsoft forums all I have to do is run some random DISM command to fix it, I’m sure that’ll definitely do the trick /s

Oh speaking of gaming - have you ever tried to use the Microsoft Store for games (which is required if you use game pass - a Microsoft first-party service)? Good luck. And if you do manage to get it to work, but have to reinstall Windows because of the fact that its had some random bullshit problem that requires a reinstall, god help you if you had your game pass games on a separate partition. You would think you’d just be able to tell Windows where the games are and not have to reinstall those - but nope, your account doesn’t own those files (even though you’re logged in with the same Microsoft account that they practically force you to login with these days just to access the desktop)! Due to the sandboxing, you can’t change the permissions back either. But also, since you don’t own those files, you can’t delete them either - and Microsoft requires that the game pass games go in a specific directory on that partition that… you now can’t modify because you dONt HaVE PerMISsioN tO DO thAT! So you need to either format the partition completely, or in my case since I had other stuff that I didn’t feel the need to copy somewhere else just to then copy it back, delete the WindowsApps folder FROM LINUX. What in the actual fuck???

Finally, after you’ve done all that, and have installed Forza, a Microsoft First-Party Game you can’t play multiplayer because the networking services are broken:

People act like Windows is some holy gift from god and is perfect - it isn’t. Anyone whose been using Windows for more than 6 months knows that this is the case, they’re just used to dealing with Microsoft’s bullshit.

Everyone who says Windows is a viable alternative as a daily driver for things other than using Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel is just delusional.

Thankfully I do have the Steam version! I made my Epic account far before they bought out Psyonix so I’m pretty sure my Epic account has been linked to Steam for a while, so it never asked me to explicitly login.
