  • f I created a community, would I become it’s (lone) moderator automatically?

Yes. But you can also immediatly appoint new mods and/or un-mod yourself if there are other mods present, so it is easy to give a community away when there are other interested users. It’s not a permanent thing.

What consequences, requirements and things would I need to keep in mind as a moderator?

Your community needs to be compatible wih the Fediverse Code of Conduct … but that boils down to “don’t be a dick and don’t post illegal stuff” which is pretty much just common sense. It’s not exactly hard to follow those rules ;)

Apart from that, you can set whatever rules you want. But keep in mind that the Fediverse is still a lot smaller than reddit, so if you are TOO niche / narrow / strict with the rules, you’ll have a hard time finding people who want to engage with your community. General, broad-themed communities with easy-to-follow rules have a bigger chance to thrive.

… and a personal little tip: don’t slam down the ban hammer at every opportunity. As a mod you are able to ban, silence, remove or otherwise “punish” people for bad behaviour, but that doesn’t mean that you have to do that. It’s a lot better to give users the benefit of the doubt, explain instead of punish (as they might not be aware that they did something bad in the first place), and give them a reasonable chance to fix their mistakes on their own before taking action. Post removal, bans and the like should be reserved solely for when the user in question is unwilling to cooperate OR did something obviously super shitty (like threatening other users, using slurs, posting illegal stuff etc.)

Is it advisable to copy-paste content from Reddit to kickstart new communities (given that the link source to the original content was added as well when making new posts)?

Well … as a last resort, yes. Original content or stuff from non-reddit sources is always preferable as it gives users of the Fediverse an incentive to visit communities here instead of going to reddit, but copypasted content is still better than no content at all, so if you can’t find interesting / worthwile stuff elsewhere, then copypasting from reddit is okay-ish too.

OC is still way better tho.

  • cast stuff like detect good and evil.

My long-term players have learned to not rely on that dumb spell anymore … because the way I handle this as a DM is purely about the intent of the characters in question, independendly from their actual actions. Examples:

    • A witch-hunter who tortures and then burns women at the stake. A person who factually and personally brings suffering, pain, fear and death into the world as per his actions. What’s his intent? Well, if he just enjoys torturing women and takes the job of a witch-hunter as a convenient excuse then he’s certainly evil. But someone who is brainwashed into thinking that burning “witches” will save their souls from eternal hellfire and suffering, actually has “good” intentions and doesn’t think what he is doing could be evil. Sure it sucks that there is blood and fire involved, but what is a broken bone or two and a little bit of temporary pain compared to an eternity in hell? The spell would tell the caster that this is a “good” dude even tho he factually does the same as the other guy.

    • An adventurer going to kill a dragon that has plagued nearby villages for ages … surely that’ll be a hero, right? Well, if he does this FOR the villagers, to save them and prevent future suffering, no matter whether it is dangerous for hmself, then he has good intentions. If someone does this purely out of spite because he happens to hate all things scaly, or purely out of greed because he wants the bounty / plunder the dragon’s hoard and he just doesn’t care for the villagers or his co-adventurers, then the spell would “detect” him as being evil, even tho both adventurers factually do the same in the end.

Of course this isn’t optimal either (the optimal solution would be to just not have that dumb spell in the first place IMHO) but it can make for nice little story twists if the obviously evil villain of the story has an ulterior motive and gets detected as “good” ;) The players might get an explanation AFTER the game, but while they’re still in the middle of an adventure, they have to figure it out on their own.

  • Update: We decided to “fast forward” the current adventure and instead play as a mini group for a while longer, outside of the village and with no NPCs. We still talked about our different playstyles again and agreed on a compromise; whenever a new (side)character / NPC is introduced, you state whether it is one you want total control over, or whether anyone else can play them - and the same for potential story elements. That way she is always sure which characters she’s allowed to play and when she should leave a plot / side story to others.

I still find it a bit weird, but it doesn’t require much effort from the rest of the group and it obviously helped. The session was nice, everyone had fun, no arguments whatsoever ;) The next plot will be a “light” one with only a few NPCs and clear reminders about which character belongs to whom. I hope it will work out as planned.

Thanks for all the help, folks!

  • As someone who loves homebrew stories with clever twists, “long term” hints for future plots and picking up ideas from the players to weave into the current story on the fly … it would not be the same for me. It might work well for generic solo play for a couple of evenings just to kill time, but I wouldn’t expect an AI to create something more elaborate than “go there, kill this, loot, XP, next quest”… and that’s a concept I usually find boring pretty fast.

That being said, if it brings you joy then there is no need to ask internet strangers for approval. Don’t let it sour your mood if others might or might not like the same things as you, and just enjoy what you enjoy ;) The world really doesn’t need any more gatekeeping.

  • The thing is, the first session was completely fine - but during that session, only the player characters were present as one half of the party was camping in a huge forest at night and the others joined them. No NPCs whatsoever, just the player characters learning to know each other in a somehwat quiet environment. And after that, the journey through the forest and to the next town …

The issues only started once they got back into civilization and NPCs became abundant, but since I never expected someone to have that particular playstyle, I of course did not tell her beforehand that she shouldn’t play other peoples’ characters for them. I mean … if I met someone who claimed to have been a driver for years, I wouldn’t tell them which side of the road they’re allowed to drive on - that’s something they’re expected to know, and anyone trying to lecture them about this rule would come across as some smartass Captain Obvious. Yet she’s apparently from one of the countries that drive on the left lane and it took the group just a bit too long to notice.

  • Correct. Whoever brings a character into play, has 100% control over said character, regardless of whether the player is just a player or the DM. And no, I didn’t explain that to her beforehand, because, frankly, I never expected someone to not know that after having played (allegedly) for years. I’ve been on dozens of different conventions, played with countless “strangers” during that time and even more newbies online, and literally never once had to explain that.

Of course it is entirely possible that there are groups out there who automatically play by the rules she is familiar with, and I’ve just never met any of them … the entire situation was just so confusing (likey for both parties).

  • Honest answer: the official reason for that is the voice acting. It would be weird for characters to call him “Link” in cutscenes while the subtitles say Poopo.

…inofficially, that isn’t an excuse IMHO as there are easy workarounds. Dragon Quest VIII for example had LOTS of voice acting even outside of prerendered cutscenes, but most NPCs had nicknames for the hero. The subtitle might have read “Hey Poopo, how are you?” but the actually spoken line was something like “Hey, my boy, how are you?” …and then there is of course the option to just leave that part out entirely and just say “Hey, how are you?” without changing the subtitle. It wouldn’t have mattered what the player called their avatar then.

  • Look at the username - you’re talking to a bot ;)

… but to answer your question, from totally legit real human to totally legit real human, the links DO work for you and people on the same instance as you (so of course you won’t notice any issues if you check the link yourself), but might cause trouble for people visiting this site from other instances as it will give them the wrong “layout”.

Just an example: people on kbin.social will see your community displayed like this: https://kbin.social/m/[email protected] with the kbin layout, interface and functionality. If those people click on a link beginning with “lemmy.world” they will get the layout of lemmy.world instead, which might make it harder for them to navigate the site properly as they’re not used to it.

  • Thanks. I think I’ll do that … the “first conversation” has already happened, but directly telling her that she either has to adjust her playstyle of find a different group, that’s something I’ve put off for a bit too long now.

It still feels weird tho. In all those years we very, VERY rarely had to remove someone from the group, and in all cases so far those have been jerks who deliberately disrupted the gameplay, so they deserved to be kicked out. In her case tho I’m positive that she doesn’t do it on purpose and just genuinely doesn’t understand, and kicking someone out for not understanding a concept feels strangely wrong. On the other hand, it dampens the mood for everyone else in the group, which is something that can not continue infinitely.

Feels like the choice between the plague and cholera.
