How do I find out if an instance is on an older version of Lemmy (like 0.17)?
If you open the instance in your browser, the version is displayed in the footer on the very bottom. Alternatively you can also go to https://lemmy.world/instances, and they show the version number of every instance in the second column.

If the communities are on instances with Lemmy 0.17.x and older, the join function doesn’t work properly. You have already joined (and will see updates in your feed) and can interact with it.
Joining really doesn’t mean “ask for approval”, it means “subscribing to their feed”. There are no private communities and commenting restrictions.
Another issue could be that the instance was offline while you tried to subscribe, which leads to a missing ping back, but again you are subscribed regardless.
Joining communities sucks in many apps. Sync does a great job here; but if indeed the instances are not federated with the ones you are using in the first place, that will lead to issues.
One of the reasons why I created a backup account with infosec.pub, which is federated with just about anyone.

Plus most people aren’t heavy users or particularly tech-savvy. Installing an OS from scratch is already too much to ask for most.

I’m using bing.com/create (free access with an office 365 account) and then use prompts such as “create a simple black & white icon with broad lines for a mobile app depicting financial management”.
Modify the prompt a few times or run it a couple times in a row until I find something I like, maybe modify it a little in Photoshop, and done.
It does, but you need to manually open the https website, they don’t automatically forward your request.
Nah they do a good job. They are having intrusive popups asking you to subscribe to their paid tier for scheduled searches and real time protection, but if you know what you want/need, the free version is alright.

Nova launcher, custom made icons in purely B/W to match my background image. Some are entirely self made, some come from various online sources, some are AI generated and manually retouched.
Opening the folders on the home screen shows the app icons in color, otherwise transparent overlay would be a messy mix of lines.

Most FOSS apps are equal to or better than proprietary software when it comes to functionality, but look like they were coded in the stone age.
Most casual users value GUI over everything. And while I personally can overlook shitty user interfaces on apps I use once in a blue moon, for a social media app I’m using daily, that’s a no go.
Yep, long press any setting and it will create an internal link for you to paste that Sync users can click.
Sync Ultra and Adfree are two different things altogether.
Ultra comes with adfree as a perk among with a ton of other stuff, but if all you care for is adfree, that’s $9.99 lifetime.
A simple network sniffer is enough to figure out what sites the app is connecting to, then you can just block them on the router.
If you are using Android, you can do that easily right on your phone with PCAPdroid, it’s on the play store. No root required.
