Full scale mass surveillance capitalism. Governments used to have to hire agents, dress them up, and have them bug peoples phones. Now they can just buy it in bulk. No warrent, no black site op, just cashing checks.
Dude the phone “app” is 100% on the list for me too.
As a stop gap between good web design including PWAs it made sense at a time, but 99% of apps are just bloated websites that data and power for no noticeable gains…
I think that it was a few months or so before the resignation, but I can’t find his post about it to really give the exact date.
His view did evolve after being talked to later about it. On the grounds that power dynamics involved in age differences create a coercive effect of even someone who could be mature enough to logically and emotionally grasp the concepts.
He is also deeply in the libertarian mind set that illegal means enforced with guns and batons and restrictions of rights, and that puts a higher bar to what should be legal.
Though I do totally agree with you on hero worship. Nobody is perfect and that impossibility is expontetially more true if want them to have been, to be and continue to be perfect forever.
I’m a big fan personally. I an experimenting more with OpenSUSE’s distro including microOS but that not because of Fedora but more so I want to recommend options that are easy to scale into FOSS professionally for people too and unfortunately RedHat no longer offers that path for Fedora users.
I do think its possible but my bet is more on the probability that it will be leveraged to commodify and further alienate labor so that that power can be leveraged less.
The tools used to align the machines is where that power would reside in. A kind of church caste for the machine with the purpose of giving meaning.
I mean he’s right. A system where ubi is just handed out to placate the unenpowered is a recipe for disaster.
We NEED real power, including economic. Why would your vote matter if the military doesn’t need you, why would your purchasing power matter if you don’t produce anything, etc. People may have intrinsic worth but intrinsic worth doesn’t the levers of power pull.
K3s! You could even reuse your pis in the cluster.
I would deploy it to your new server, setup your CSI (e.g longhorn its pretty simple), find a helm chart for one of the apps and try deploying it.
More comforting than the alternative. Its one reason why when material conditions worsen people faith goes up.
Me too. I mean heck I built an EV in highschool as part of a class (a barely road legal one seated but still). They really do represent an opportunity for BETTER right to repair and home mods.
Had a VM that batch processed files but some reason a couple of the files comming in was causing the procedure to crash and Gigs of files to get clogged.
I was moving big chunks of those into the host tmp Dir (only place I knew was ok to throw rand stuff) to try and catch the offending files. TMP was actually a RAM disk, so I filled all availability memory and crash the HOST system (including multiple other critical VMs) and lost weeks of data (because you know I put it in a RAM disk …).
Desktop computers. I know more people that don’t have access to a full computer now than I did as a kid, with smart phones filling most of that niche for people.
I miss them though, easy to maintinace, upgrade and tinker with. I love listening to old heads talk about early computing too where you were expected to really program for the hardware too.
Old websites or services you just ran at home like email, bultin boards, mumble, etc.
Cars you could work on at home. EVs ironically represent a potential to return us to that time because the extreme tolerances to make high mpg ICE just isn’t there, but most manufactures seem intent to add complexity and black box controllers to prevent that.
Maybe I say thisas someone that can’t find my own stuff around my house lol
For sure. Though you can never really know. I look at death statics for my age and area every once in a while to adjust my risk taking or too see what health concerns I should be prepping for.
Knowledge is half the battle and all
I do DevOps engineering, but to most family I just say computers which means I am an expert at everything online and can help make an app for their phones or make crypto.
Luckly managing expectations IS part of my job lol
I’m always amazed when people know what shelves and aisles things are at off the top their head. I am asking 100% expecting people needing to ask some who runs that department or to check the system.
As a citizen of the world its because they are slavers and fuck slavery. One of the biggest lobbiest against fighting slavery too.
Having been friends and family IT though its because they suck. They suck to work on. They suck to devolop for. They suck to run server stuff on. They suck to game on. And they cost an arm and leg for the privilege.
We have get togethers and go to conferences to have that.
I get that not everyone is the same though. Hell I’ve gone over to friends to work like the lab parties we had too, which I’m sure is an anomaly.
I’m super excited to see SLES more in the US government space with RGS. RedHat was my goto champion of FOSS in public sector but since they have gone less Libre/FOSS SUSE is last big commercial Linux company still going commuting to FOSS.
