TotallynotJessica@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•UK: Support for the monarchy falls below 50 per cent for the first time, new poll says30·1 year agoThe most foundational concept to America is economic exploitation and cut throat entrepreneurship. Selfishness is more foundational to American conservatives than the church or the state. Trump was openly a selfish asshole. One would think that open disregard for others would disqualify someone from the highest elected office, but the right thought otherwise. Being a bully meant that Trump was strong. A lack of empathy isn’t a vice, but a virtue.
It just isn’t worth it for the dogs. They could kill the cat, but they’d get badly cut up. Predators avoid fighting all together in most instances, and when they do fight, it’s usually over a scarce resource. Even when hunting, animals learn to minimize unnecessary injury.
Wild dogs in certain countries may choose to move in with humans or leave when they feel like it. That’s been true for most of their history. Hell, the main reason dogs in most English speaking countries don’t roam free and join humans at will is thanks to a concerted effort to eradicate them because they hunt livestock and can hurt humans. Dogs are apex predators in their own right thanks to superior social abilities over cats. Dogs mostly chose to live with us, and many have the ability to survive without us.
Other common pets like rodents and parrots can also exist in nature just fine. Parrots are exceptionally intelligent and while rodents aren’t, many are powerful enough to be a major pest to us humans. Cats are awesome, but they’re only more autonomous than other pets in the modern era. Most other pets aren’t allowed that level of freedom for their own safety and for ours.
If wild dogs or coyotes are common in your area, it might not be a good idea to even let them roam. Where I live, roaming cats have short life expectancies thanks to coyotes and cars.
I don’t think this is quite right. Cats might do something you don’t want them to do for the sole purpose of pissing you off, but I don’t think they understand stealing any better than other animals. My dog won’t steal things just to make me upset, but she will for another reason. She stole a rag from somewhere when she escaped one time, but she did it to show off to us, not to make us mad. Dogs certainly don’t like it when you take something they’re eating, and probably understand that we don’t like it either. Cats differ from other pets in that they piss you off for fun, not because they understand naughtiness or ownership better.
Many animals have an understanding of ownership and territory that’s not dissimilar to our own. If they intend to eat or use an object, they’ll protect it with violence. Animals won’t let other animals into their den most of the time, might guard food or water sources, and predators will protect their territory with violence. Modern human ownership simply passes most of the duty of protecting property to the state, while pet owners are in charge of keeping our pets from taking things we don’t want them to take through physical force. That’s all ownership is: protecting things we want the exclusive ability to use through violence.

Why would a tiny nation control the US? They have influence with American interests in many ways, but control it? It makes no sense. The only position that this would make sense from is the same antisemetic cabal bullshit. A small group controls the world alright. The wealthy, most of whom are white Christians. They control things, not Jews.

TotallynotJessica@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•Rishi Sunak considers tax cut for top earners after byelection defeats1·2 years agoAll elections, or just elections in liberal democracies? I can’t think of any major Marxist country that didn’t do some form of representational democracy, even if the elections are just a formality. China does it. The Soviet Union did it. They didn’t make elections dissappear, they just kept politicians that disagreed with the party line from running.
In large societies, not every decision can be made through direct democracy, so we need someone to make those decisions. Why not have a legislature? Is a group of unelected decision makers better?
TotallynotJessica@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•As Gaza is bombed, EU staff decry chief’s ‘uncontrolled’ support of Israel92·2 years agoHamas would do it too if in the IDF’s position, but that’s even more of a reason for us to support Israelis that want lasting peace. Part of sustainable peace would be Israelis supporting anti-Hamas Palestinians. Attacking Gaza doesn’t really threaten Hamas’ power, but IDF reserves protesting Netanyahu did. If Israelis stop harassing Palestinians, Hamas risks getting replaced by a less fascist government. The goal of Hamas isn’t bettering Palestine, but ruling Palestine. Parts of your country being destroyed is preferable to getting overthrown for political entities like Hamas.

TotallynotJessica@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•Germany is staring at the end of its economic model2·2 years agoI agree overall, but for Germany in particular, they have fewer opportunities for renewables than other countries. At the same time, their most plentiful source of home grown energy is coal which is worse in every way to the gas they were getting from Russia. The economy only matters in so far as it serves the people, but it unfortunately matters a lot for people’s well being, especially in the context of global capitalism.

I don’t think it would have significant enough savings. Like the other person said, them not being as safe probably plays a bigger role. I would not be surprised if we see a large scale nuclear disaster in China within the next 50 years.

I would have hoped to see even a half assed attempt, especially after how poorly the Obama strategy of trying to be shitty on immigration to impress independents worked. Seems as though they fully believe nothing can be done. Pathetic.

TotallynotJessica@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•Russia ‘systematically’ forcing Ukrainians to accept citizenship, US report finds41·2 years agoOr maybe it is true because the smaller purveyor is still pretty terrible and has openly been super imperialistic. They do not deserve support or respect simply because they oppose a country that is larger in almost every way. It’s possible to not simp for empires yah know. Enter transactional agreements with them to support yourself, sure, but don’t think of them as friends. Russia was totally in the wrong, as they started it to everyone’s detriment, including their own.
