Like most any paid VPN service they need to track bandwidth usage somewhat. They can’t see what you’re accessing but they can see how much of whatever it is. Windscribe also offers a free 10gb/mo plan so they do track it for that purpose as well, much like any VPN with a free tier would.

Given that all Lemmy instances are run by private individuals you should probably think about using a vpn (or dns proxy at the very least) to obfuscate your true location and data. This applies to any mainstream or corporate social media platform, obv.

On Mac I’ve found Safari gets thru every time for some reason where chrome and Firefox do not. I might have the prevent IP tracking setting enabled or whatever but I never have to turn off my VPN (nor sign in) if the other browsers get flagged. Ymmv.

Mainstream journos suck. They’re getting corpobashed and competing with chatbots now so that’s part of why they don’t have their wits about them I guess. The good ones have all gone indie or reader-supported over the past half decade. I only started “doing” social media of any kind right around lockdowns and found the mElon site before he bought it and ended up following a ton of bleeding edge writers blasting stories realtime. Most of them have migrated to bluesky which is good. I wish more of them had given Mastodon a chance tho.

For sure, regional departments could do it. It would take a lot for individuals to get on board but it has happened before.
