  • You probably know most of it so just some advice: Don’t format the Partition table (MBR to GPT etc.) on the disk whose data you wish to keep.

Shrinking a partition or moving it carries a small risk of data loss and will take significantly longer than creating a new partition (since data needs to be cut and pasted from one area of the disk to another). If your old laptop has an empty slot for another SSD or NVME drive you can plug that in, and still dualboot and having the new drive Linux only.

Also to deal with the occasional Windows cockups, just carry a boot-repair USB, the auto repair has fixed the Windows issue for me 90% of the time (the other times are usually boot order priority or other BIOS setting)

  • It would be just the same with Jill Stein or Chase Oliver as leader, Wall Street will benefit. There is obviously outsized influence of rich people in government, but big money makes money with money, doesn’t matter what the politics are.

It’s more important that A. The US doesn’t put a leader who has real plans to become dictator and the Project2025 yes-men lined up behind it, and B. The US chooses a leader who better represents the national interests of common people, which will not happen if too many would-be Harris voters choose 3rd party or abstains.

  • If you’re feeling risky, dd can do everything you want to but it can also fuck everything up if you make a mistake (so can ignoring warnings on gui programs). So triple check everything (the if= and of= portions in particular) before you run any dd command. Launch a live distribution off a CD or USB to use a disk image maker or dd, don’t make images of the operating system disk while it’s being used for best results. A couple sample methods:

    • make an image of the entire smaller disk, place it on a third storage disk
    • restore the image from the third disk to the destination disk you want
    • then resize the partitions or add new ones on the second disk using Gparted for the remaining storage space.

The quicker but riskier method is to directly clone the first disk to the second larger disk, then adjusting the second disk using Gparted to add or expand partitions.

Either way it will copy everything from the old disk including windows and root partitions.

  • Compared to other national and international chains, I’ll pick Dominos. Here in Vancouver there are just so many local pizza shops and smaller chains to choose from, even the cheaper/quantity over quality chains taste better than both Pizza Hut and Domino’s (I’m thinking Freshslice for the Western Canadians in the room). Even corporate pizza events here don’t go with Domino’s, which was the go to when I was elsewhere.

  • Backed by arms shipments from the US and their own production, I’m confident that Israel has the capability of achieving some of their military goals.

However, the world’s trust that the Israel government and military command has lost for their people will be much harder to recover. Unless there’s eventually a trial on the scale of Nuremberg charging Netanyahu, the ruling party, responsible government officials, domestic and foreign military contractors, settlers and soldiers for crimes against humanity, I cannot trust that Israel means peace when it speaks it, or that any goods and services coming from Israel aren’t rigged with bombs and malware.

I have nothing against Jewish people, but the atrocities committed by the Israeli government tarnish the reputation of Isreal’s people and businesses. And as a Canadian, I bear some responsibility for not pressuring my government strongly enough to condemn the terrible conduct over the past year either.

  • Well, as you may be aware, banks like getting money.

Taking money from their customers through banking fees and interest on both deposits and loans isn’t enough for the banks and credit card issuers. So they sell credit card and loan usage information to whoever will pay for it, and these credit monitoring companies will, to keep a file on you (tied to your SSN/SIN). They know how many loan accounts and how long you’ve had them for, how often you pay your loan bill on time vs. not, what % of your credit limit you tend to use each month, and when you go shopping for new loans (since loan agencies will request your file from them to determine whether you are trustworthy enough).
