  • Well, in the linked comment, on the second line where it says to import the converted epub into editing software like sigil, there was a link to a piece of software called sigil, it’s for editing EPUB files, and it’s called sigil. It’s the second link in the comment that takes you to the EPUB editor software called sigil.

I have been tempted to upload them for others to use, but all the authors that I’ve done it for are really small niche community authors, and I do not want to take support away from them.

Just because I’m a broke ass bitch and have decided to re-copy them however I see fit for my personal consumption, doesn’t necessarily mean I want to become a bootlegger publisher.

  • I would like to do something like that but I don’t want to be scrutinized about technically being a bootleg publisher.

The books I did it to are from small authors writing for niche communities and I don’t want to make it easier to pirate than buy in that case. Anyone else can find those same PDFs on a website easy to search and well recommended by the community so the information is available, and if they want an ePub they can format it themselves or just buy the version from Amazon and support the author.

    1. Use convert.io to convert pdf to EPUB
    2. Import EPUB to editor software such as sigil
    3. Find editing issues in the text by hand, once you’ve found one issue that gets repeated like “AuThOr 78” for page numbers
    4. Use the search and replace function to replace all instances with blank
    5. Skim over the text for a couple minutes not reading, but looking for other weird breaks in the text flow
    6. When you think you have them all export the file and start reading, if you see any other less obvious issues mark them in the notes and do a final edit for aesthetics

You now have the book on EPUB to be placed in your personal cloud or whatever.

  • I grew up on RuneScape and BBC programming, so I’ve been exposed to both formats for a long time (really fucked me up in spelling). I couldn’t say why August 9th sounds more natural, but it’s probably because most irl folks around me use it. The 9th of August didn’t sound bad, just more artificial, and it’s probably because my exposure to that spoken out was mostly media and pop culture.

  • My philosophy is if you live in a Christian majority country yet you assume everyone else who just so happens to be godless heathens just have to hear you say “Jesus is Lord” before you die to make them change their minds you probably don’t have anything worthwhile to learn from and are just too radical to give any real thought to the point of the question, or you are trying to perform as a “Good Christian” and won’t have a genuine answer for it.

No point trying to coax wisdom from someone like that, at least from my experience when I’ve tried.

  • The end user experience for your website would be terrible and inconsistent, phones don’t have the kind of uptime and availability that you would need, and keeping them plugged in 24/7 in a closet doing computational tasks is a good way to end up with battery bulge and one spicy mini pillow.

There are too many nefarious purposes that could benefit from being able to serve public web services from your smartphone and no consumer benefits that average people would care about.

Fortunately it doesn’t matter what I want to allow and is up to the cellular service providers which have all kinds of stipulations about what constitutes as service abuse and using an inordinate amount of bandwidth is usually one of them.

So for security safety and service stability reasons, yeah, there is no legitimate reason why it SHOULD be allowed. Just spend the $5 monthly on the hardware and bandwidth instead of potentially making your neighbors cell data worse or setting your house on fire/ blowing up your closet just so you can have an unconventional web server.

  • I keep a place for everything, and everything in its place. My download folder is cleaned regularly, usually right when I download the file I move it to it’s appropriate place. Sometimes it still fills up with old installers or what have you, if it is a hard to get installer like for old devices, old games, or niche hardware I store it in a safe place on my encrypted cloud, otherwise if it is new software or frequently updated I just delete it after I’m done.

  • It doesn’t help suss out reactionaries, but my favorite question is “If you had one thing to share with humanity in your dying breath, what would it be”? If they say anything about religion it’s basically a “Thank you, next…” from me.

The worst answer I got was probably “something from Tony Robbins”, like verbatim, not anything specific just “Check out this 80’s era con artist” would be the most important thing he could tell someone.

One of the best answers I got was “All you have is Love and time, and only one of those has to be limited”, that was from a Veteran who was dying of untreatable Brain Cancer.

If it’s a file I want sorted by date the top is good. If I am talking about a date and spelling it out August the 9th of 2023 makes the most sense and seems natural, and if it’s a personal memo or date label on food I just use 08/09 with the zeros so I know it isn’t a fraction unless it’s frozen or shelf stable for long term storage where the year would be useful to know at which point it becomes 8/9/23

I thought everybody used different date formats based on need.

  • They simplify it so much it becomes less practical.

Yeah. My habit and instinct as someone who understands file trees is to open somewhere like Downloads then use the go up one directory button to home, but windows doesn’t want to do that, it basically acts as a back button in that instance and dumps you back to the recents window.

I feel like I’ll never have the perfect setup because I’m too opinionated to want to deal with windows, and have too many niche games and software that were coded like shit to run well in wine or proton (like Kingdom Hearts 1+2 on PC that switches renderer for video cutscenes and break the compatibility layer. Who wants to play a Disney JRPG without the cutscenes and videos?).

The one that bugs me is that they don’t have a “Home” link by default on the explorer sidebar. When I first install windows I add it, but when I have to help someone else for some reason and have to go to the home directory the easiest way to do it is to go through “This PC”>C:>Users>[Name] then try to find what they are looking for. Why not just open that location at default instead of the nebulous “everything you’ve ever used or interacted with”? Half the time it’s full of garbage or one off files they have no interest in reviewing but are too afraid to delete.

Better yet, why not auto sort web downloads based on file extensions to their relevant home folder? I had that setup on a Linux box for a minute and I legit miss it.
