We’ve never had real communism.

I don’t think human nature will allow for true communism at scale. Like all political organizations beyond a handful of people, corruption is de facto present and completely at odds with the theory.

People can swear up and down that it’s doable but I truly don’t think it could ever be by humans. We are too selfish.

I mean, the argument that communism is slavery to the state is a real and valid argument as of 2024.

It’s not like capitalism is any less a form of slavery, except instead of stealing from everybody to give to everybody it steals from everybody and gives it all to insurance companies and other businesses benefiting oligarchs. The whole system is slavery under another name, work for the luxury of having a place to sleep at night so that your owner can live a comfortable life. Slavery to many masters who use your body for their gains.

There’s not going to be a system that you’re not a slave to though, unless we somehow find a way to trivially convert matter to energy and vice versa and build a utopia where machines do everything for us… and we all share the rewards. All hail science fiction communism? (and keep in mind science fiction keeps becoming reality! Just don’t hold your breath for this in our lifetimes.)

Sure, near the end of the ottoman empire there was a very brief period where there was some coexistence. Very brief.

The area was effectively a bloodbath until the twilight years of the ottoman empire for a very brief period.

From the muslim conquest of the levant in the 7th century, to the christian crusades across several centuries… there has been seemingly countless wars in the name of religion in the region. The conflict goes back much, much longer than 124 years.

Anyway, you talk about this being a question of something. I see no questions whatsoever. I just see hate after hate, bloodshed after bloodshed. It won’t end until humans bring themselves to extinction or one side wipes out the other because we’re incapable as a species of anything else.

I’m glad that the UN is pushing to get Israel out of the Gaza Strip at the least, but the damage is already done. The cycle will just continue because the hate will never end.

The jewish and the palestinians have something in common. They were both driven from their home. It’s a shame that coexistence wasn’t the way it went but that’s humans for you… everyone who isn’t one of you is an other, and humans hate others.

I’ve yet to see a subscription that doesn’t abuse it’s customers. Time and time again predatory practices are employed by massive multibillion dollar companies like adobe, amazon, planetfitness (and all of the f’ing gym memberships…)

This is not to mention all of the predatory landlords who simply live off of the hard work of others akin to slave ownership. Primary housing shouldn’t be an investment. If you want to rent a home the renters should become mandatory purchasers and get proportional equity to how much money you put in it, a system can be divised to sell shares in housing that you can sell out.

Fuck rent. Same goes for the telcos ‘renting’ services to us. We pay for the subsidies to put up the fiber lines anyway, why are we paying again for them? The real costs are a small fraction of what we pay.

I worry about the monthly charges every month when I check my credit card bill. I would never stop worrying about my mouse.

Subscriptions are a great way to sell a service to someone who isn’t using it, and when they want to cancel it getting the spent money on something never used is generally impossible.

IMO for something like a streaming service… if you don’t stream a minute of video in a month you shouldn’t have to pay anything.

The storage drives for all of this have been stripped. You can’t just run commands on the hardware… you have to figure out how to cluster things with software, buy drives for it all, have it all installed in a datacenter somewhere which is going to cost way more than the purchase price.

The labor costs for the technical people required to do this are way more than half a million a year.

The piecemeal nature of selling thousands of parts means the wages for a group necessary to coordinate it all would probably make the whole thing not feasible.

Ebay prices are higher than market prices imo. 15% ebay cut + 3% paypal fees + sales tax + shipping is brutal.
