  • Yeah I think they misunderstood what was happening cause they were getting wealthier as they got older.

Honestly, you just become more protective of your stuff and things you consider yours as you get older.

There are plenty of nerds that are super conservative about their fandoms and what is allowed to happen with them and same for all kinds of niches but the idea we would get more conservative with money really assumed we would accumulate more of it and assets. But what people do have is their apps and thoughts and those… Those people will be just as conservative as the boomers are about their money as they get older.

  • So this has been true of YouTube Red since the beginning. It’s one if the reasons I got it. But they use watch time as the way to divide your money out. It actually makes it extremely unfair split for people that make great but short content. It’s also why longer content became more popular around that time and those 24/7 streams run like that.

Also why creators started doing channels of just padded run time content of like building legos and eating things. It’s to secure better and funding.

The current setup is pretty busted and feels like the wheels are coming off again.

  • Yeah, 3 times over the last decade but mostly in a row cause it’s hard to claw your way back up. I found a storage unit was nice the second time cause as long as I knew I could only take a couple hour naps during the day all my stuff was at least safe at night and I just needed to find somewhere safe to hang out.

Last time I got lucky with a flop house that was cheap but… Definitely a flop house. I couldn’t imagine it right now though. Been sheltered for a few years now and it certainly does seem rougher and the weather less helpful.

I’m shocked Hoovervilles haven’t made a return but land is a lot more private now and people are more willing to obey the law.

  • I didn’t have a car so I just slept outside and then got a motel room 2 days a week the first time I was homeless. Definitely the shelters are a problem that I didn’t want to deal with and couldn’t get into if I wanted to most of the time.

But also the motel costs were still like $35 a night and generally was only possible because I still had a job.

Being homeless is so costly and so stressful.

It’s shocking how often I think the assholes of Lemmy have hearts in the right place and thus I don’t block them but are otherwise overly committed to specific and weirdly hyper critical takes.

Like they want the discussion/fight but only as long as they win every time even though no one is 100% right about anything. And not everyone needs to know or believe in the same hyper specific thought process they believe in.

  • I have a leather coin bag full of change that I swear I could bludgeon a person to death with because it just so rarely gets used.
It pulls down my pants if I bring it with me anywhere.

I recently had it with me out recently and ended up paying the restaurant bill in exact change because of it and we were all amazed. They say it doesn’t happen really anymore.

I just can’t justify the like 8 bucks of paper money it would make me either.

  • Yeah I do agree that American cash doesn’t stretch as far. I’m definitely having to hit the ATM or cash back option way more than before for how much things cost. 50s are good for restaurants and the like but 100s are so weirdly distrusted and a pain. But I rarely get back 5s and 10s cause seriously inflation is just so good damn high.

I keep thinking I’m gonna pull out a bunch of cash to have but then… Yeah I am not one to stuff it under my mattress and it being available electronically is so useful… Sigh…

Trying. It’s all we can do until things change for real.
