  • I’ve known good criminals and bad cops. Bad priests. Honorable thieves. You can be on one side of the law or the other. But if you make a deal with somebody, you keep your word.

Cyber criminals want to make more money like anyone else. So if they get a reputation of going back on their word, they aren’t going to get their next payday.

What paying the ransom does is empower their next data exfil and let other hackers know you’re willing to deal.

I’m not saying there aren’t bad actors out there.

    Fuck Ticketmaster.

  • I absolutely hate how dependent we’ve gotten to IPv4. To the point that Amazon is charging almost $4 a month per IP. It used to be free. These assholes are buying IPv4 addresses so fast that they are literally driving up the price.

Is there a resource that you can recommend on learning IPv6 based on my knowledge on IPv4? A lot of resources I’ve seen are way over engineered for my feeble brain.

Like I know what IP addresses are and what port numbers are. I don’t understand the difference between how IPv6 addresses are assigned (both locally and generally speaking) and what makes it different from IPv4.

    I know it’s not DHCP.

Edit: This post provides a link to a great summary for those who know IPv4 but need to learn IPv6.

  • Is it just me or are cheques still the best, cheapest, most secure, and generally universal way to send money from one person to another?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot the past few weeks.

    • Assuming all parties have a bank account, you normally can get checks for free or some nominal amount.
    • Checks can be deposited via a bank’s mobile app.
    • They don’t require you to download a separate app.
    • You can stop a check by calling your bank
    • Since your money doesn’t leave the bank, it’s FDIC insured

Yes I know that the MIRC line isn’t secured but your account is still protected by the bank for any fraud. You don’t get those same protections from venmo or cashapp.

The closest I’ve seen is zelle but not every bank supports it.

Every bank supports depositing in a check.

  • This right here. I know lemmy is all “LINUX IS FOR EVERYONE!” But it isn’t.

I know this would go against Google’s self interest but they are best poised to make Linux mainstream. Chrome OS can play android games natively. But it’s all close source.

It wouldn’t take much to make the ecosystem for general Linux. I don’t know if the other android-based OSes are working on this but anything we can do to push gaming into Linux would help it to become a better everyday OS

That’s what the primary is for.

If you have a dem that no longer aligns with your interests, you vote them out during the primary.

But then you show up during the general, hold your nose, and vote Democrat.

    Want to know why?

Because the Republicans will vote Republican no matter what and we’ve unfortunately pushed our democracy to the point where we either vote for the somewhat okay guy or the guy that will bite your face off.
