People think emulator protections in the law are stronger than they really are. Sony vs Connectix made emulation legal, but it wasn’t heard by the supreme court. PS1 games weren’t encrypted and relied on other methods like disc wobble to prevent piracy…so without proactively violating any measures you could just not include that check in your competing emulator and play retail discs without breaking any laws.

In steps the DMCA anti-circumvention laws for bypassing video game / console encryption measures, which is an even bigger untested minefield without precedent in favor of emulation. And since games are default encrypted on new consoles and arguably not subject to exemption (at least while still supported) it really might be a disaster to fight it.

Nintendo is a dick but it’s not in our interest or theirs to really push the boundary on the status quo. The get to slap suit whatever they want taken down, we get to play the emulation hydra game where it’s still legally grey.

They definitely do, especially legacy stuff that’s still kicking. Sweet, sweet tech debt that you hope won’t be a real problem until you’ve moved to a different company.

I’ve used word/onenote or FOSS equivalents the same way, they’re fine as a scratchpad for notes. As you said it’s nice being able to shove images in there. There are so many things that don’t belong anywhere else that I will forget after even a half hour break.

I’m doing my part by writing really shitty foss projects for AI to steal and train on.

Now that the Steam Deck and linux gaming has found some success I really hope Valve or someone else revisits the home console market with a similar approach.

You couldn’t really build a PC for the same price as a PS5 with the same performance unless you’re buying used parts in most places but that’s not because Sony is selling consoles at a loss right now like the olden days. A large system integrator like Valve (or xbox if they want to change their formula) could offer similar perf/price without all the downsides of these locked down consoles.

The nice thing is that a lot of environments that are secure enough to decide to airgap systems these days also make infecting the system and even moreso retrieving the emissions really difficult. Still a really cool field though and I’m glad this Dr. Guri is getting real weird with it.

It’s important to note how we got here. In old English man just meant human. Wereman meant male and wifman meant female. Over time that “were” prefix got dropped and man now means male but the ambiguous meaning of humankind stuck around. In fact “human” comes from old french “of man”, again the non-gendered use of the word man.

The point is to fix all these problems we just have to bring back the “were”. The progressive werewolves are way ahead of us on this issue.

If you use a private website for your social media we just loop back to where we are right now in a few years. Even if it seems great now there will eventually be enshittification.

I had access to everything legit and still mainly sailed the high seas. I just prefer to have all the content centralised and local.

A lot of people assume the US is just giving money mostly like cash too when a majority is really military equipment/training. It’s kind of a win for the US because it supports their political goals in the region, gives them a chance to test weapon systems in real conditions, replace these weapons with more modern and advanced versions for the US military, and the money “paid” for these systems also mostly stays in the US economy anyway.

A lot of people hate being “left on read” where they see a programmed read receipt but aren’t actually acknowledged. Or for messages without programmed read receipts it does that as well. The thumbs up is also supposed to end conversations quickly.

It’s more like “look at this shit”/“you seeing this?”/“whoa” for general stuff. Or sometimes with a slightly inappropriate joke or flirting the eyes acknowledge that and lessen it - like saying jk did back in the day.

In this context if I sent a contract to someone younger and they responded 👀 I might have to doublecheck if something was glaringly wrong with it.

That’s not really how 👀 is used these days among the young folk, but I wouldn’t expect a random Canadian farmer to know that either.

I don’t think that a thumbs up emoji should be a valid signature. The farmer was responding to “please confirm flax contract” and the thumbs up emoji really could mean “I’ve seen your text and will look at the contract to confirm/deny soon.” Although the article did also mention that the same type of acceptance had happened previously with this farmer where the contracts were treated as valid and fulfilled so the farmer is probably disingenuous with their argument.
