Gothic rock

The song has been met with controversy regarding its subject matter. “A couple of people blamed me for a suicide someone committed over here saying that ‘Join Me’ is an invitation to kill yourself,” HIM frontman Ville Valo told the European magazine Metal Hammer in 2003. “What I was trying to do was sort of rip-off ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ by Blue Öyster Cult, making a rock track of Romeo And Juliet.”[2] Lyrics such as “Would you die tonight for love?” have contributed to the misconception that the song is about suicide, which Valo denies, claiming the lyrics refer to giving things up for the sake of love. “It’s not about suicide, that song. It’s about giving it all away,” Valo told the magazine Modern Fix.[3]

Truly awesome, and I had the pleasure of first hearing it live.

Does it fit the industrial genre though?

Great question! The “founding charter” of this community is: “An inclusive community for discussion of all things industrial, goth, EBM, and noise. Treating the labels with very broad strokes here, don’t hesitate to post.” and HIM’s wikipedia page called it “gothic rock” so I figure it fit on here.

To be honest, this is the first time I’ve listened to this band’s music; one of the reasons I post so much on this community is because it gives me an opportunity to check out bands I’ve heard about but never really listened to. (As well as sharing songs that I heard on twitch or elsewhere.) I invite anyone reading this to join me in posting!

No gatekeeping intended! I’m an alien to this community and made an assumption based on the name and regarding a genre I know little about. I’m not actually sure what “industrial” means because I’m more of an EDM through the ages kind of guy.

Nevertheless, this track and Poison Girl were highlights of that weekend in Orlando. My wife actually introduced me to their music and the night ended with a beautiful rendition of Love Song for a Vampire.

I think it may not fit the industrial genre, but certainly fits into goth.

I don’t fully understand how goth and industrial came to be so closely related, but I suppose it could be that both share roots in New Wave? In my experience it’s also a very welcoming and inclusive community, so why limit your musical tastes. 😀

I’m more partial to industrial myself, but I can still go from rocking out to the sound of an old drill on sheet metal to chilling out with more of a ballad like this song.

Thanks for posting, and lots of love to you all!
