Obviously it’s because China and North Korea, being totalitarian dictatorships, have made suicide illegal and punishable by death!

(I have literally met someone who thought that suicide is punishable by death in China. Like if you try to kill yourself and survive they’ll finish the job for you.

I always find it fascinating how readily people in the west will believe the most patently absurd things about countries they’ve been told to hate.

And it’s of course projection as always, for example, suicide was illegal in UK till 1961, and most other western countries also criminalised it at some points in the past.

I think it’s because they’re raised from birth having only heard these absurd notions and many never consider if they are truly absurd or not. It’s kinda sad.

          Another drooling hit from Sh.itjust.works!

“NUH UH I CAN’T TRUST CPC OR NK NUMBERS” why? They’re totalitarian and authoritarian? So is America. They lie about numbers? America doesnt? Every single criticism you land here could be applied to the shithole capitalist country you live in twice or four-fold. So, what is the actual reason you don’t believe them?

Because they’re just North Korean? What? You believe the shit that is said about the country?

@666 @Sprocketfree no, it’s because, unlike NK or China, in US these numbers come from variety of sources which makes them verifiable. In contrast China an NK numbers come from the government only and no actual verification is possible.

UNDESA and organizations are still allowed in and typically collect information on other things such as mortality rates and causes of death. NK has 10k tourists a year and many more likely undeclared…do you think not a single other organization other than the NK government does at least some research when there is other organizations from global institutes doing similar research as well?

N.K is also in WHO. https://data.who.int/countries/408 Even just here they mention other organizations that have collected info from North Korea…

Why do you think it works like that for China and North Korea? Do you think Xi or Kim look over every report that a organization creates after they summon them to central government? Why?

Do we have actual proof that North Korea actually fudges those numbers then?

        From Wikipedia:

In many countries, suicide rates are underreported due to social stigma, cultural or legal concerns.[3] Thus, these figures cannot be used to compare real suicide rates, which are unknown in most countries.

        China Asia 6.7

        North Korea Asia 8.2

        South Korea Asia 21.2

And it didn’t list numbers for Taiwan

I don’t want to be accused of fudging the numbers. Everyone here is capable of using a search engine and exploring one of many helpful websites that tracks suicide rates around the world.

The interesting thing you’ll find is which of the two countries OP fudges the numbers on even tho their “point” wouldn’t need the help.

The reason you’d have more suicides is because more people are unhappy with their lives to the point where they want to end them. Meanwhile, even if we don’t the exact reason, we can see that there is a statistically difference in outcomes between two systems. Let me know if you need this explained in simpler terms.

Let me make this simple for you: how do you trust an authoritarian government to provide correct suicide rates? Do you think north korea wants people to believe their citizens are unhappy or happy?

You dismiss a “personal opinion” and then try to provoke them to make more on an obvious communist website? Holy shit, what a joke.

The image says 16.7 for Taipei, not 6.7. neither my comment nor the image contains a 6.7.

Now you can argue all western and Eastern sources are undercounting nk and China, that’s why I didn’t even include nk given the natural mistrust of information from a country with less than 10k tourists a year; but any search of this info online shows the same trend: Chinese nationals dont commit suicide as often as their oppressed neighbors.

Your premise if false. Defectors run off because they don’t know what the conditions are like and have bought into propaganda. Many who leave end up regretting it once they realize what they got themselves into. An example here https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqjre1zpz5ko

Incidentally, this was the case with the dissolution of USSR as well where many people expected their lives to improve with introduction of capitalism. They were quickly disabused of these delusions once they got to experience the system first hand.

      • A remarkable 72% of Hungarians say that most people in their country are actually worse off today economically than they were under communism. Only 8% say most people in Hungary are better off, and 16% say things are about the same. In no other Central or Eastern European country surveyed did so many believe that economic life is worse now than during the communist era. This is the result of almost universal displeasure with the economy. Fully 94% describe the country’s economy as bad, the highest level of economic discontent in the hard hit region of Central and Eastern Europe. Just 46% of Hungarians approve of their country’s switch from a state-controlled economy to a market economy; 42% disapprove of the move away from communism. The public is even more negative toward Hungary’s integration into Europe; 71% say their country has been weakened by the process.

      • The most incredible result was registered in a July 2010 IRES (Romanian Institute for Evaluation and Strategy) poll, according to which 41% of the respondents would have voted for Ceausescu, had he run for the position of president. And 63% of the survey participants said their life was better during communism, while only 23% attested that their life was worse then. Some 68% declared that communism was a good idea, just one that had been poorly applied.

      • Glorification of the German Democratic Republic is on the rise two decades after the Berlin Wall fell. Young people and the better off are among those rebuffing criticism of East Germany as an “illegitimate state.” In a new poll, more than half of former eastern Germans defend the GDR.

      • A poll shows that as many as 81 per cent of Serbians believe they lived best in the former Yugoslavia -“during the time of socialism”. The survey focused on the respondents’ views on the transition “from socialism to capitalism”, and a clear majority said they trusted social institutions the most during the rule of Yugoslav communist president Josip Broz Tito. The standard of living during Tito’s rule from the Second World War to the 1980s was also assessed as best, whereas the Milosevic decade of the 1990s, and the subsequent decade since the fall of his regime are seen as “more or less the same”. 45 percent said they trusted social institutions most under communism with 23 percent choosing the 2001-2003 period when Zoran Djinđic was prime minister. Only 19 per cent selected present-day institutions.

      • 75% of Russians have expressed increasingly positive opinions about the Soviet Union over the years. Only a small portion of those surveyed said they had negative associations with the Soviet Union. The economic deficit, long lines and coupons were named by 4% of respondents each, while the Iron Curtain, economic stagnation and political repressions were named by 1% each, the Levada Center said.
