“Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms. […] If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there.” ― Gene Roddenberry

then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there

I felt this in my bones before I knew about that quote; so many my-hero worshipers crave a space version of Manifest Destiny and often jerk off to “the Na’Vi are stupid and bad in Avatar and should be exterminated, actually” manifestos.

The Na’vi are religious communists living in perfect harmony with their natural environment. Humans are a capitalist garbage species that bombed their home planet to shit and now its rain is acid. So according to Earth apologists, the correct course of action is for humans to exterminate the Na’vi so they can ruin Pandora too while still not solving the problems on Earth, and somehow that’s supposed to make things better
