I grew up in a household where my father since his college days was pretty much influenced by communism , due to which the time I was growing up , I had a lot of marxist , leninist literature at home , and there were few ussr imported books about communist ideologies ! Few other of my family members are quite communist as well ! So anyone else has similar background ?
if im not mistaken our dear comrade @[email protected] has a really based grandma and aunt* who lived during the soviet union in the Czech SSR, her aunt/* was a total badass who helped the resistance fight off the nazi hordes in guerilla warfare by using IEDs at age 80/*, absolute legend

so my grandma was too young for fighting in WW2, i had a relative, iirc my grandma’s aunt, who was 80 something and used her cover as an elderly old lady to plant IEDs, her name was kristina :)
my grandma was a pretty high ranking member of our regional communist party and did agricultural union work mostly but before that she worked at a factory as a low level union steward creating munitions for the vietnamese in the vietnam war

honestly kristina went through so much in her life that its kinda mind boggling. our family had our whole village occupied by the german military at least 3 times in her life time, including during her formative years as a kid. had many men in our family get ruthlessly conscripted into austrian and prussian militaries against their will and dying in some far off place. its no wonder she was ready to kill some germans

one thing i remember reading is she had like 3 brothers that died underaged in austrian coal mines, had 12 siblings total. just a wild and rough life. glad she got to see an independent socialist czechoslovakia before she passed at a grand old age.

My dad was a committed communist in his youth to the point that he was prepared to die for the revolutionary cause, but he ended up becoming a socdem. Even so, I at least got the sense growing up that communism wasn’t evil because I knew my dad wouldn’t have supported something evil (and he never spoke of it as such), and I inherited his mistrust of received wisdom which primed me to ask the right questions.
?Kinda, my mom’s father was a member of the communist party of chile during the dictatorship, he was safe because a comrade went to the party hq and burned all the membership documents saving thounsands of lives.
During her childhood her home had banned books and a che guevara poster in her room and one time her father was forced to hidden in the forest for a time because the dina was seaching for him.
Because of this my mother grew up with a positive view of allende and mostly fidel castro and cuba, i remember she also defended chavez and fidel back when they were alive and nowdays does the same to Amlo.
She is the reason why when i was a socdem i was pro cuba because i knew at least fidel wasnt a sellout like other latam politicians
I would say she is a pro-communist social democrat.
But my dad is a pro-pinochet centrist so only 1/2 my family is pro communist
Me upvoting every post in this thread out of jealousy because my entire family consists of libs (with a few chuds who are distantly related to me) with the exception of my spouse, a unionized RN Berner who occasionally says based things due to her socioeconomic position in society kind of making that almost inevitable, and my kids, who radicalized with me (and whom I brainwashed) when it became clear in 2020 that democracy does not exist in the USA.
Dad was some kind of fellow traveler in his youth, but I think forgot some important lessons about critical media consumption as he got older. Went from reading black panther lit and the monthly review to pretty uncritically watching shit like msnbc, etc.
I think he sort of just thinks the dems really do mean well and are doing the best they can now. Just a casualty of the end of history maybe. It’s weird though because he will occasionally concede that I’m right on certain fundamental things when we inevitably argue about politics. He’s maybe just really lowered his expectations over the years.
