If they’re not being banned in the Middle East’s biggest market (where there are rumors even ‘Barbie’ potentially isn’t safe from censors), studio tentpoles are being muscled out of the box office, sparking a trend that looks set to continue as local moviegoers sour on “Americanized” releases.

“Fifty percent of the population in Saudi does not speak English,” explains Gianluca Chakra, head of regional distributor Front Row, which, via its Front Row Arabia joint venture with exhibition giant Muvi, was behind the releases of Sattar, House of Ruby and The Boogeyman. “They just relate to local stuff.”

Makes sense. It’s great that they’re finally getting their own content.

Ahh yes, Memento and Mulholland Drive are insulting and total shit because they’re American lol.

I get what you’re trying to say but conflating every American movie with what succeeds at the box office is probably keeping you from experiencing and enjoying a wide assortment of amazing movies.

okay, 1 in 25 movies isn’t total shit. You just mentioned two from decades ago.

Are you really expecting me to list every good American movie in the past 30 years instead of just engaging in an actual conversation or maybe taking a step back to challenge your opinion internally so you can enjoy life a little bit more?

It’s 2023, sea lioning isn’t cool, my dude. It’s neckbeard behavior and no one wants to talk to neckbeards.

What? I don’t like fucking movies. That’s it. Doesn’t mean I’m “sea lioning” or a “neckbeard”. If you like movies, great, I’m extremely happy for you. If it makes you feel super happy about yourself to say insulting things to strangers online, you may have some psychological problem and good luck with that.

This whole interaction is only happening because you commented with an insult and I suggested you open your mind a bit. Why are you commenting here if you don’t like movies or want to talk about them? I’ve been very civil and don’t know why you think trying to have a conversation is some attack on you.

        I didn’t think I was, but thanks!

Also I didn’t notice this was a film sub, so no wonder people don’t agree with me. That’s nice. You have your interests and opinions, and I’ll have mine.
